Metric Tons of Carbon Emissions Avoided

Solar energy works by capturing light from the sun and converting it into usable electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect. As of 2026, solar is a mainstream, high-efficiency energy solution used for residential, commercial, and utility-scale power globally.

Following This Process

Capturing Sunlight: Solar panels, which are made of many individual photovoltaic (PV) cells (typically silicon-based), absorb particles of light called photons.

Generating Electricity: When photons strike these cells, they knock electrons loose from atoms. Because the cells contain a built-in electric field, these free electrons are forced to flow in a specific direction, creating an electrical current.

Conversion (DC to AC): The current generated by the panels is Direct Current (DC), the same type found in batteries. However, most homes and appliances use Alternating Current (AC). An inverter is used to "translate" the DC electricity into AC electricity.

Distribution: The AC electricity flows to your home's electrical panel (breaker box), which distributes it to power your lights, appliances, and devices.

Storage or Export:

Batteries: Any excess electricity produced during the day can be stored in solar battery systems (like lithium iron phosphate or sodium-ion) for use at night or on cloudy days.

The Grid: If your system is connected to the utility grid and you don't have a battery, excess power can be sent back to the grid. In many areas, "net metering" allows you to earn credits on your utility bill for this exported energy.
